Behavior modification

At BratPak, we understand that, like people, every dog is unique. So the training approach should be tailored to each dog’s distinctive personality. Dog trainers who rely on overly harsh, “cookie-cutter” techniques fail to understand the complexities of dog behavior. That’s why we follow the “LIMA” approach to dog training, focused on positive reinforcement and using the minimal level of correction necessary. We apply our deep expertise in dog behavior to evaluate each case independently, then develop strategies to effectively communicate with your individual dog and meet your specific training objectives. Our goal for training is very simple—to help provide you and your best friend a happier and more harmonious life together.

what is l.i.m.a.?

“LIMA” is a dog training philosophy, specifically related to behavior modification, and stands for “Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive.” Although it sounds very complex, the concept is quite simple. Under the LIMA approach, a qualified dog trainer expertly evaluates the individual dog and the associated behavior, and uses the LEAST INTRUSIVE behavior modification tactics necessary to resolve that behavior. In some cases, this may mean NO CORRECTION at all (see attached graphic). It just depends on the individual dog and how they respond. You can find additional details on LIMA HERE.

developing a
well-balanced dog

When many people (even some trainers) think about “dog training” they only think about “obedience,” which is the type of training you typically receive in group classes. In actuality, there are 3 very specific categories of training, and it takes a well-rounded blend of all 3 to develop a well-balanced dog.

  1. Obedience Training involves teaching your dog new skills (sit, stay, come).

  2. Socialization is the process of building confidence and appropriate behavior by exposing your dog to different things (mostly people and dogs).

  3. Behavior Modification is the deliberate effort to change an unwanted behavior.

At BratPak, our training focuses on the relationship between you and your dog and teaching YOU how to better communicate your rules and expectations for your pup. This is why we believe the most effective training occurs in your home. Our focused approach also saves you significant cost when compared to expensive “board and train” programs.

We charge by the session without any extended contracts. Each session will last approximately an hour and will focus on your specific training objectives. Our cost is $150/session and we offer discounts for recent rescues and puppies under 6 months of age.

We had one meeting (so far) with Sean and our 6 year old Lab, Bella, to work on walking without pulling. Sean was very well organized, gave clear instructions, and picked out the right tools (leash and collar). Bella now is so much better walking that it is a pleasure for both her and I. I strongly recommend Sean..”
